The Art of Mastering Many Tongues →
This leads [Michael Erard] to distinguish between the multilingual and the hyperpolyglot, or the purely acquisitive language learner. “For multilinguals, learning languages is an act of joining society,” he writes. “There’s no motive, no separable ‘will to plasticity’ that’s distinct from what it means to be part of that society.” But “being a hyperpolyglot means exactly the opposite. The...

« Canada Blog » http://zeekyboogydoog.tumblr.com/ Impressive! This travelling German has seen more big-horn sheeps than I ever did when I lived in Canada. *jaw drops* He also ventures into places to which I would never go (cough, cough, Fort Nelson).

An interview with Peter Gzowski and Julia Child,...
Julia: I don’t know why people are going through this terrible fear of food.
Peter: There are people who say to you, well, you’re not going to put butter on that are you?
Julia: If you leave things out you don’t know what you may be missing. When I was working on my last cookbook I was interviewed by Arthur Schwartz in New York, and he had just been interviewing a diet doctor, who suggested no fat at all. And Arthur looked close at this man, who didn’t look very healthy, and noticed that he was covered in dandruff! Because he wasn’t eating any fat, he had no normal amounts of bodily oils. You’ve got to eat a little bit of everything.
Peter: You encourage people to enjoy things like, hollandaise, and pâté… There’s been a real stir with the health craze that’s going on now.
Julia: But in sensible amounts. You should have everything. You should know how real food is supposed to taste.

Re: Angry, Racist Butcher from Downstairs
@ricanontherun Thank you for that tip. I will make sure give him a big smile the next time I see him. Maybe he hasn’t encountered kindness from people on a regular basis. I notice that his meat shop is unusually quiet. People don’t really go there as often as they do with the other ones around. Thanks, thank :D

Angry, Racist Butcher from Downstairs
That butcher from the shop located right below our apartment is pretty creepy. He has issues with foreigners. He one time got so offended when I chose not to buy more meat from him (dude, I just needed several sausages), and blamed it on my Portuguese.  Him: “Why don’t you buy more? Ah, I see why. You don’t know Portuguese. If you don’t know Portuguese, you would know what...

@ricanontherun: I think it is a huge blessing that our families are helping us with our German. You have more pressure to learn in some sense because of those residency examinations in Austria. I shared about your situation with my partner, and we now sometimes wonder what the requirements in Germany are like. Because after his work contract is over in Lissabon, there is a high chance that we...

WTF? I have an American accent? No way!
@uncdan: Lol, it seems like whatever language we speak, there’s bound to be an ‘accent’. I sometimes don’t know why some people would bother with pointing it out. My professora commented how well I enunciated my German, but with an “Amercian accent”. I thought to myself, WTF. So how does it work in Switzerland? Do they teach you High German in classes? High...

@ricanontherun: It is only for the past several months or more that I began to learn at my own pace. Back in high school, I didn’t care much to. But now, I have more emotional drive to learn more German. (Love really makes a difference :D I know, it sounds cheesy, but you know what I mean.) I’m very in love with German culture, society, and food! (and partner!) I also hate to be a...

@ricanontherun: I’ve been using the “Grammatiktrainer - Deutsch” book by PONS (www.pons.de) even before I began the course. My partner got it for me while we were last in Germany. He also got me the “Verbtabellen Plus” to help me with my conjugations. I must agree that I’m starting the A1 course with quite a bit of vocab and knowledge already in my head. I even...

Warum Deutsch?
[Okay, this is where my German is limited…] However, I...

Haven't Been -_____-; Missing E App
@missoftheswiss: Nope, I myself haven’t been to Switzerland. My partner has (I think with his family years ago or on his way to a conference. I can’t remember). Now that we are in Europe, it would be so much easier to go :) Life in the Swiss must be so much more different than the one in Chicago, eh? @uncdan: Thanks. I tried to download the Missing E app but didn’t work...
